I began lessons at the age of 8 and learnt in a formal way through graded exams.
In the last few years I have taken the Associated Board Performance Diploma and then went on to the Piano Teachers Course at the Purcell School of Music in London. It was here that I was taught the holistic approach to teaching the piano with the idea of the ‘sound before the symbol’ at its core. This involves internalising the sound (hearing it your head), then vocalising it and then relating that sound to what is read on the score and played on the keys. This ensures that aural skills and the imagination are constantly engaged and developed. We can relate this approach to learning to speak before learning to read and write.
I continue with my own musical development with regular piano lessons and a monthly online course ‘The Curious Piano Teachers’ which is led by tutors from the PTC and keeps me abreast of the latest piano teaching pedagogy as well as in contact with many other piano teachers.
I am a member of EPTA and the ISM and have been DBS checked.
